An adjustment has multiple effects on the joints and surrounding areas. For example, one of the most powerful effects of an adjustment is its ability to decrease pain. When something hurts, the pain receptors in our nervous system can become “hyped up” and more sensitive than usual. An adjustment has been show to decrease the hypersensitivity of pain receptors, meaning it can decrease pain.

Think of it as if someone were to hit you in the shoulder and you instinctively rub that area to make it feel better. An adjustment has that effect but longer lasting. An adjustment also improves joint motion. Over time, if we don’t use the full range of motion of our joints, we develop movement compensations and tightness of the tissues around a joint, causing poor joint motion. An adjustment improves the range of motion of the joint and causes relaxation of the muscles around the joint that can be in a painful muscle spasm, which also decreases joint compression. A large number of chiropractors only adjust the joints of the spine.

At The Movement Fix, we are highly trained to not only adjust the spinal joints, but also the joints of the extremities (ankle, knee, foot, hip, wrist, elbow, shoulder). We use a number of different CMT techniques, but we are heavily influenced by the diversified adjusting technique, motion palpation institute, and drop table techniques. Functional rehab consists of exercises that get your body to move in ways in which it was designed to move. It is used to reinforce proper movement patterns. It is used to improve blood flow into muscles that have been deprived of oxygen, so your body can heal faster.

It is used to help negate the harm we do to ourselves on a daily basis, like sitting for countless hours per day driving to work, at the computer, driving home from work, and in front of the TV. We make functional rehabilitation one of the centerpieces of our treatment approach. We can only see you for so long in a day/week/month that in order for you to really get better, it’s important that you reinforce our treatment with rehab on your own.
This will help you get better faster. Need to schedule an appointment? Cupping is a form of myofascial release that has been used for thousands of years, and proven effective for generations.

Plastic, glass, or silicone cups are placed on the skin and create a decompressive effect on the tissues below. They pull the muscles and connective tissue into the cup to release adhesions below and improve blood flow to the local tissues.

Cupping also allows for lymphatic fluid (swelling) to drain out of muscles allowing for a faster recovery. Need to schedule an appointment? It is becoming an increasingly popular tool in the sports world, but it can be beneficial in everyone, not just pro athletes. Kinesiology tape is a stretchy tape that does not limit motion the way white athletic tape does. There are many different thoughts on why kinesiology tape is effective.

It is one of those things you have to try to really understand, but here are a few of the mechanisms that are believed to be why it is so effective:

The elasticity of the tape lifts the skin: Because of the stretch that can be placed on the tape, it creates a slight lifting of the skin, which improves the movement of lymphatic fluid (swelling) to be drained out of irritated tissues. This helps with post-injury bruising and edema.

Skin sensory receptors: There are almost an infinite number of sensory receptors in the skin. When we place the elastic tape on the skin, the skin sensory receptors send signals to the brain
and spinal cord that then reflexively cause the muscles underneath to relax.

Flexible support: Placing kinesiology tape on top of an overstressed area, an achilles tendon for example, can help to disperse the tensile forces over a wider area in order to decrease the amount of tension on the stressed area. The doctor or therapist uses either a plastic, metal, or composite tool to treat soft tissue fibrosis, scar tissue, and restrictions.

The treatment may be uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. The technique is designed to improve blood flow to tissues that are hypoxic, meaning they have decreased oxygen delivery. IASTM also causes a small inflammatory reaction in the area treated, which helps bring cells to the area that can clean up debris and facilitate the healing process.

When scar tissue is laid down after either an acute or chronic injury, it lays down haphazardly, instead of in the direction that motion usually occurs in that tissue. This causes stiffness, hypoxia, and limited range of motion. IASTM is a very effective tool to correct these issues. Need to schedule an appointment? Movement screening allows for these issues to be systematically found and treated to improve your movement and health. Need to schedule an appointment?
